Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers @ Alpharetta Amphitheatre 4 29 12

I guess it takes someone like Tom Petty (www.tompetty.com) to get me to leave Athens for a Rock Show. Tom played at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park, in Alpharetta. I’ve never seen him before and I would have enjoyed it fine if it was a decade or three ago, but seeing him in 2012 was sort of like seeing an icon as huge as Bob Dylan for me. I’m not comparing him to Dylan, and I ain’t saying all of his songs are as important as Dylan’s, but there were some folks in the crowd with whom Petty is more important. Everyone knew every word to every song (or made up their own), some being favorites of mine since the late 1970’s. If he had dropped his pick on his guitar strings the crowd would have gone nuts. I was thrilled to hear ‘Refugee’, ‘Here Come’s My Girl’, and ‘American Girl’. He also played ‘Travelin’ Light’, a JJ Cale song more famously covered by Widespread Panic on their first album Space Wrangler in 1988. I’ve been singing along with Petty songs longer then Panic’s or JJ Cale’s, although I know more of the latter two. I didn’t try too hard to take pictures or videos, I was just really having a good time with some friends.

‘To Find A Friend’

‘Here Comes My Girl’

‘Yer So Bad’ (Travleing Wilburys)
